Choosing a standard
ISO 9001, ISO 14001 or ISO 45001: which should you choose?
ISO 9001 addresses quality management, ISO 14001 environmental management, and ISO 45001 occupational health and safety. Start with your organisation’s activities and the specific requirement you need to meet. You may consider one standard or several.
Three management priorities
| Standard | Focus | Starting question |
|---|---|---|
| ISO 9001 | Quality management | How do we consistently deliver what we agreed with customers? |
| ISO 14001 | Environmental management | How do we manage the environmental aspects of our activities? |
| ISO 45001 | Occupational health and safety | How do we identify hazards and control risks to people? |
Start with the actual requirement
If a customer requests certification, keep the exact wording: standard, edition, activities and any accreditation conditions. A certificate with a different scope may not meet that request. Share the requirement before choosing your certification package.
If the initiative comes from within the business, describe the operational objective. Complaints and delivery performance can frame a quality discussion; waste and resource use an environmental discussion; machinery or site work a health and safety discussion. These examples help identify questions, rather than automatically determining the required certification.
When an integrated system makes sense
An organisation may coordinate processes, responsibilities, documentation and internal evaluations across several management systems. Choosing three standards should still reflect real operations and business objectives.
Clarify the shared scope and the differences between systems before requesting a proposal. InterConformity’s grid includes estimates for one, two or three standards; the audit arrangement is confirmed for the organisation.
Published editions and existing certificates
On 5 October 2026, the ISO catalogue lists ISO 9001:2026, ISO 14001:2026 and ISO 45001:2018. Publication of a new edition and transition of an existing certificate are separate matters.
For a certificate issued against an earlier edition, confirm the transition arrangements with the issuing body. Separately confirm the edition and scope available for your InterConformity proposal. Do not independently change the edition shown on the certificate or in commercial documents.
Turn the question into a practical choice
Write down your activities, customer requirement and internal objective. Then use the standard and cost finder. Its result starts the discussion; the proposal establishes the agreed standard, edition and scope.
Frequently asked questions
Can I choose more than one standard?
Yes. You can discuss assessment of several management systems; the scope and audit arrangement are established before the proposal.
Does ISO 9001 certify every product?
No. ISO 9001 certification assesses the quality management system within the declared scope.
