First certification
ISO certification for a small business: where to start
A small business can approach certification by starting with its existing activities and responsibilities. Clarify why the certificate is needed, choose the relevant standard, define the scope and prepare evidence of how the business operates. Team size does not replace assessment of the management system.
Start with a precise business question
“We need ISO” opens the conversation, but a proposal needs more context. Has a customer requested ISO 9001 for your services? Do you want better organised processes? Are there separate environmental or workplace safety requirements?
Keep the customer’s request and describe the activity for which you will use the certificate. Where a business provides several services, the proposed scope needs to identify what will be assessed clearly.
Build on the way you actually work
In a small team, one person may have several responsibilities. Explain who receives customer requirements, who delivers the work, who checks the result and how problems are handled. Documents and records should be usable within that structure.
For a service business, an order history may show the requirement, acceptance, delivery and feedback. For a workshop, the trail may include material receipt, operations and product checks. These are discussion examples, not a universal mandatory document list.
Separate preparation from independent assessment
The organisation implements and maintains its management system. The certification audit assesses it against agreed criteria. Clarify the requested services and each party’s role from the outset.
A certificate should not be treated as a document purchased without assessment. Allow time for application review, audit planning, any resulting actions and the certification decision.
Plan budget and team availability
Use InterConformity’s grid as an initial estimate and distinguish the initial fee from annual surveillance. The specific proposal clarifies scope, locations, personnel and the assessment arrangement.
Nominate a contact person for the certification body. Every colleague does not need to attend every discussion, but the relevant people should be available according to the audit plan.
Five practical next steps
- Describe the activity you want certified.
- Add the customer’s requirement, if there is one.
- List employee numbers and operating locations.
- Use the standard and cost finder.
- Send the details to the team for the applicable proposal and next steps.
Frequently asked questions
Is ISO 9001 only for large companies?
No. The standard applies to organisations of different sizes and sectors. Scope and assessment take the organisation’s context into account.
How long does certification take for a small business?
The schedule depends on scope, readiness, locations and audit planning. It is established after reviewing the enquiry.
