Occupational health & safety

What is ISO 45001?

ISO 45001 is an international standard for occupational health and safety management systems. It can help an organisation establish processes to identify hazards, assess risks and consult workers.

What does an audit assess?

Depending on the certified scope, an assessment may review evidence about:

  • hazard identification and assessment of work-related risks;
  • applicable legal and other requirements;
  • worker participation and defined responsibilities;
  • emergency preparedness, monitoring and incident handling;
  • corrective action and management-system improvement.

An audit does not replace regulatory inspections and cannot guarantee the absence of incidents. It assesses the management system against defined criteria.

What information should I prepare?

Prepare a description of activities, locations, headcount and relevant risks. These details help determine the proposed scope and audit effort.

How does certification start?

After an initial review, the proposed scope, available scheme, applicable edition and audit stages are clarified. These elements are confirmed before a proposal and audit plan.

Edition note: this page describes ISO 45001 in general terms. Confirm the current edition and availability of certification for your scope before the process begins.
